Uses of Nizral Shampoo (Ketoconazole 2% Solution )

Nizral solution (ketoconazole 2% shampoo) is indicated for the topical treatment and prophylaxis of conditions in which the yeast Pityrosporum is involved, such as pityriasis capitis (dandruff). Nizral shampoo is also indicated for seborrheic dermatitis.

Nizral Shampoo (Ketoconazole 2% Solution ) - Dosage

Generic Ketoconazole 2% Solution should be administered exactly as suggested by your doctor. Your doctor may recommend a dosage depending on your age, medical requirement, body weight, other medical conditions, and current medications. Ketoconazole shampoo 2% is for use in adolescents and adults. Wash affected areas and leave for 3-5 minutes before rinsing.
Treatment:
Dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis:
Wash hair twice weekly for 2-4 weeks.
Tinea versicolor:
Once daily for 1-5 days.

Prophylaxis:

Use once every 1-2 weeks.

Missed Dose

Ketaconozole is a boad spectrum synthetic anti-fungal agent which inhibits the in vitro growth of certain dermatophytes and yeasts by altering the permeability of the cell membrane. Studies suggest that ketoconazole impairs the synthesis of ergosterol, which is a vital component of fungal cell membranes.

Contraindications

Warnings and Precautions

Hypersensitivity Reactions:
Severe hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported during post-marketing use of Ketoconazole shampoo, 2%. If a reaction suggesting sensitivity or chemical irritation should occur, use of the medication should be discontinued.
Medical History

Ketoconazole Interactions

Do not stop, start or change the dosage of any other medication during the course of Ketoconazole shampoo without consulting your doctor.
Topical Corticosteroids:
In patients who have been on prolonged treatment with topical corticosteroids, it isrecommended that the steroid therapy be gradually withdrawn over a period of 2 to 3weeks, while using Nizoral 2% shampoo, to prevent any potential rebound effect.
Keep Out Of The Eyes
Keep out of the eyes. If the shampoo should get into the eyes, they should be bathed withwater.

Side Effects of Nizral Shampoo (Ketoconazole 2% Solution)

In three open-label safety trials in which 41 patients shampooed 4-10 times weekly for six months, the following aide effects each occurred once: abnormal hair texture, scalp pustules, mild dryness of the skin, and itching. As with other shampoos, oiliness and dryness of hair and scalp have been reported. Application site reactions that were reported in less than 1% of subjects were dryness, erythema, irritation, paresthesia, pruritus, rash and warmth.The following side effects have been reported during the course of treatment with Nizral Shampoo (Ketoconazole 2% Solution) :

• Hypersensitivity- burning, irritation, blistering, hives, peeling, itching, redness, rash, stinging, burning, swelling of the skin at the site of treatment

In humans, Ketoconazole is not detected in plasma after chronic shampooing on the scalp.
Ketoconazole has been shown to be teratogenic (syndactylia and oligodactylia) in the rat when given orally in the diet at 80 mg/kg/day (a dose 10 times the maximum recommended human oral dose). However, these effects may be related to maternal toxicity, which was seen at this and higher dose levels.
Do not use this medicine without your doctor's consent in case you are pregnant. Stop using this medication and inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant during treatment.
