What is Vardenafil? What are Vilitra Tablets Used For?

Vardenafil tablets belong to a class of medication known as Phosphodiesterase inhibitors. Vilitra tablets are used for the oral treatment of erectile dysfunction in men. These medicines prevent an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type-5 from working too quickly. The penis is one of the areas where this enzyme works.
Vilitra tablets are not suitable for women or for individuals under the age of 18. Vardenafil Hydrochloride tablets do not offer protection against pregnancy or the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV virus.

Vardenafil Dosage

Vilitra Mechanism of Action – How Does Vardenafil Hydrochloride Work?

Vardenafil belongs to class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor. Vardenafil Hydrochloride tablets prevents the activity of an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5.
An erection during sexual stimulation develops from a cascade of events. This process requires the signals from the nervous system which would result in the release of chemical messengers in the penis. One such chemical messenger involved in this process is called cyclic GMP. Cyclic GMP relaxes the blood vessels, resulting in an increase in the size of the blood vessels in the penis. This increase in blood vessel size permits more blood to flow into the penis, which ultimately results in the penis becoming firm and erect.
Usually, cyclic GMP is suppressed by another enzyme in the body called phosphodiesterase type 5. Vardenafil Hydrochloride tablet prevents the activity of phosphodiesterase type 5, thus inhibiting the suppression of cyclic GMP. If the cyclic GMPs are available to increase the size of blood vessels, the blood vessels are kept widened for a longer period of time, continuing the enhanced blood flow to the penis and maintaining a longer erection.

Contraindications

Vilitra tablets are contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Vardenafil Hydrochloride or any inactive ingredient present in Vilitra tablets. Administration of Vilitra tablets with nitrates (either regularly and/or intermittently) and nitric oxide donors is contraindicated.Consistent with the effects of PDE5 inhibition on the nitric oxide/cyclic guanosine monophosphate pathway, PDE5 inhibitors, including Vardenafil, may potentiate the hypotensive effects of nitrates.

Overdose

The maximum dose of Vardenafil for which human data are available is a single 120 mg dose administered to healthy male volunteers. The majority of these subjects experienced reversible back pain/myalgia and/or “abnormal vision.” Single doses up to 80 mg Vardenafil and multiple doses up to 40 mg Vardenafil administered once daily over 4 weeks were tolerated without producing serious adverse side effects.
When 40 mg of Vardenafil was administered twice daily, cases of severe back pain were observed. No muscle or neurological toxicity was identified.
In cases of overdose, standard supportive measures should be taken as required. Renal dialysis is not expected to accelerate clearance as vardenafil is highly bound to plasma proteins and not significantly eliminated in the urine.

Warnings and Precautions to be taken when using Vilitra Tablets

Medical History
Before starting a course of Vilitra tablets (Generic Vardenafil), discuss your personal and family medical history with your doctor. Inform your doctor if you have had a heart attack, stroke, or life-threatening irregular heartbeat within the past 6 months; certain eye problems (retina diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa), uncontrolled chest pain, seizures, uncontrolled high blood pressure, low blood pressure, angina, irregular heartbeat (congenital QT prolongation), heart or blood vessel disease, bleeding disorder (hemophilia), severe heart failure, stomach ulcer, penis disease/injury/deformity (angulation, cavernosal fibrosis, or Peyronie's disease), sickle cell anemia, diabetes, high cholesterol, myeloma or leukemia, severe liver problems, or end-stage kidney disease that requires dialysis. Allergy

Cardiovascular Effects:
Patients should not use Vardenafil if sex is inadvisable due to cardiovascular status.
Risk of Priapism:

Effects on the Eye:
Patients should stop use of Vardenafil , and seek medical attention in the event of sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes, which could be a sign of nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). Vardenafil should be used with caution, and only when the anticipated benefits outweigh the risks, in patients with a history of NAION. Patients with a "crowded" optic disc may also be at an increased risk of NAION.
Sudden Hearing Loss:
Patients should stop Vardenafil and seek medical attention in the event of sudden decrease or loss in hearing.
Alpha-Blockers:
Caution is advised when PDE5 inhibitors are co administered with alpha-blockers. In some patients, concomitant use of these two drug classes can lower blood pressure significantly leading to symptomatic hypotension (for example, fainting).
QT Prolongation:
Patients with congenital QT syndrome or taking class IA or III antiarrhythmics should avoid using Vardenafil.
Vardenafil and Alcohol:
Consumption of excess alcohol can reduce your ability to experience an erection. You may be deprived of the maximum benefit of Vardenafil HCl tablets (Vilitra tablets). Alcohol consumption can also increase the risk of certain side effects.

Vardenafil Hydrochloride tablets During Pregnancy

Vardenafil Hydrochloride (Vilitra 10 mg and 20 mg tablets) is classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category B.
Vardenafil tablets should be used only in men. Vardenafil Tablets (Vilitra 10 mg and 20 mg Tablets) is not indicated for use in women. Women should not consume Vilitra tablets. There are no studies of Vardenafil use in pregnant women.
No evidence of specific potential for teratogenicity, embryotoxicity or fetotoxicity was observed in rats and rabbits that received Vardenafil at up to 18 mg/kg/day during organogenesis. This dose is approximately 100 fold (rat) and 29 fold (rabbit) greater than the AUC values for unbound vardenafil and its major metabolite in humans given the maximum recommended human dose (MRHD) of 20 mg.

Nursing Considerations
