Ovral L tablets are monophasic, low dose, oral contraceptive pills. Each Ovral L tablet contains a combination of synthetic estrogen hormone (Ethinylestradiol) and synthetic progestin hormone (Levonorgestrel) which help in the prevention of unwanted pregnancy.

The active ingredient present in each Ovral L tablet ar a combination of two synthetic hormones, Levonorgestrel and Ethinylestradiol. The inactive ingredients present in Ovral tablets are cellulose acetate lactose, magnesium stearate, polacrilin potassium, and D&C Red No. 30.

What are Ovral L Tablets Used For?

Ovral L Tablets are oral contraceptives used for the prevention of pregnancy. Regular and correct administration of the 21 hormone pills and 7 dummy pills during the 28-day monthly cycle ensures the manifestation of withdrawal bleeds at the end of every cycle, thus effectively preventing pregnancy. Ovral L pills are helpful to control menstrual cycle in women who have irregular cycle regulation and also works to reduce the abdominal pain during periods.

Ovral L Tablets - Dosage

Take one Ovral L tablet containing the active hormone combination daily at the same time for 21 successive days. You can begin the new pack of 21 tablets after 7 days. During those 7 days, you can take the 7 dummy pills which do not contain the hormone combination.
If you have not used an oral contraceptive in the previous month:
Start the first Ovral L tablet on Day 1 of your menstrual cycle. If you begin the course of Ovral L tablets any day between Days 2-7 of the menstrual cycle, you will have to use supplementary non-hormonal means of birth control (such as condoms) for the first seven days of the medication.
  If you have used another oral contraceptive in the previous month:
Begin the course of Ovral L tablets on the next successive day after the last tablet of your previous pack of contraceptive pills.
Switching from a progestin only method (progestin-only pill, injection, implant)
You can change any day from the progestin-only pill and start the course of Ovral L contraceptive pills from the next day. In case of implant removal, start your course of Ovral L pills on the same day. In case of injections, you can start the course of Ovral L tablets the day the next injection dose is due. It is however, always advisable to use an additional protection for the first 7 days of Ovral L treatment.
Women who have recently delivered a baby should not use Ovral L birth control tablets until 28 days after the delivery date.

Ovral L Tablets - Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of Ovral L contraceptive pills, use the following recommendations to consider your future course of action:  1. If you miss the Ovral L tablet which contains the hormone combination:
• If you are less than 12 hours late in taking your dose of Ovral L tablets, take it as soon as you remember and take the next one on the following day at your usual time. You are still protected against pregnancy.
• If you are more than 12 hours late in taking your dose of Ovral L tablets, take the last tablet as soon as you remember and take the next one at your normal time, which may mean taking 2 tablets in one day. There will be a decrease in contraceptive protection and you will be at a potential risk of becoming pregnant, unless you practice other contraceptive precautions for the next 7 days.
2. If you miss two active Ovral L tablets for two consecutive days during week 1 or week 2, you should take two tablets on the day you remember and two tablets the next day. Consequent tablets should be taken at the usual time. In addition, a non-hormonal back-up method of contraception (condoms) should be used for the seven days after the missed dose.
3. If you miss two active Ovral L tablets for two consecutive days during week 3, or if you miss three or more tablets consecutively during weeks 1-3, abandon the rest of the pack of Ovral L tablets and start a new pack the same day. Use supplementary methods for the first 7 days of the new pack to prevent pregnancy.

Drug Mechanism of Action – How Does Ovral L Work?

Ovral L tablets are oral contraceptives which contain a combination of two synthetic forms of the hormones, estrogen (Ethinylestradiol) and progestin (Levonorgestrel). Ovral L tablets suppress the release of the egg from the female ovary during the 28 day menstrual cycle. It also prevents the chances of pregnancy by thickening the cervical mucus to inhibit the entry of the sperm into the uterus. The synthetic hormones in Ovral L tablets also modify the endometrial lining, making it difficult for a fertilized egg to implant itself in the uterus.

Storage Instructions for Ovral L Tablets

Store Ovral L tablets at controlled room temperature (20°C to 25°C). Excursions are permitted from 15°C to 30°C. Store Ovral L pills in its original packing in a place without moisture and sunlight. Keep it away from the reach of children and pets.

Contraindications

Ovral L tablets are contraindicated in women who have the following medical conditions:

Warnings and Precautions to be taken when using Ovral L Tablets

Medical History
Before starting the course of Ovral L birth control tablets, let your doctor know about your medical history. Be sure to inform him if you have suffered / are suffering from any of these medical conditions: sex-steroid dependent cancer, past pregnancy in outside of the uterus, malabsorption syndromes, functional ovarian cysts, active liver disease, recurrent cholestatic jaundice, jaundice during pregnancy, heart disease, kidney failure, diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, migraine, conditions aggravated by fluid retention, depression, blood clotting disorder, stroke, bleeding of the brain, known or suspected breast cancer.
Smoking
Women above the age of 35, who are on the course of Ovral L tablets should avoid smoking because it increases the risk of serious cardiac and/or vascular episodes such as blood clots, stroke, or heart attack.
Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Oral contraceptives such as Ovral L tablets are not meant for protection against sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV and AIDS. Barrier contraception such as condoms should be used for protection against sexually transmitted diseases during the course of Ovral L tablets.


Drug Interactions
Certain drugs alter the efficacy of Ovral L contraceptive pills . Inform your doctor about your current medications such as prescription medications, over-the-counter-drugs, dietary supplements, vitamins, minerals, and herbal products. Drugs that reduce the contraceptive ability of Ovral L tablets are antifungals (ketoconazole), aprepitant, barbiturates (phenobarbital), bosentan, carbamazepine, felbamate, griseofulvin, HIV protease inhibitors (Indinavir), hydantoins (phenytoin), modafinil, nevirapine, oxcarbazepine, penicillins (amoxicillin), rifampin, rufinamide, St. John's wort, tetracyclines (doxycycline), topiramate, or troglitazone, Valproic Acid. Conversely, drugs such as Atorvastatin, vitamin C, Acetaminophen, Beta-adrenergic blockers (Metoprolol), corticosteroids (Prednisone), Selegiline, Theophylline, Troleandomycin, Indinavir and Fluconazole increase the concentrations of Ovral L in the blood and result in a higher risk of side effects due to drug interactions.
Diabetes patients
