Depo Provera Contraceptive Injections are an effective and safe method of birth control. Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection also alters the cervical mucus, making it difficult for the sperm to reach the uterus. The contraceptive impact of a single shot of Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection lasts for 12 weeks.
Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection is also used to alleviate the pain experienced by women during endometriosis. Depo Provera Shot Indications - What is Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection Used For?

Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection, manufactured by Pfizer, contains the synthetic version of the female hormone called progesterone. Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection is commonly administered for the effective prevention of pregnancy in women. Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection is given once in 3 months and its contraceptive effect lasts for 12 weeks.
The impact of Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection begins instantaneously on administration of the first dose which is usually within the first five days of the monthly period. Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection is known to be 99% safe and the chances of pregnancy in women using Depo Provera Contraceptive Injections are 1 in 100. Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection effectively averts the chances of pregnancy by inhibiting the activity of hormones called gonadotropins which are responsible for the release of the egg from the ovary during the cycle of ovulation.
Without the gonadotropins, the egg is not released and thus pregnancy cannot occur. Even if the egg is released from the ovary, Depo Provera Contraceptive Injections also alter the lining of the uterus which makes it difficult for the fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.
Depo Provera Shot is also used as intravenous therapy for the treatment of endometriosis, a medical condition in which the cells of the uterus develop outside the uterus. Medroxyprogesterone Acetate injections are also recommended for the effective treatment of pain and certain symptoms associated with various types of cancer such as metastatic uterine cancer, breast cancer, kidney cancer, and cancer of the endometrium.
Depo Provera shots can only be used for the treatment of the symptoms of these cancers but cannot be administered as a cure for the cancer. Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection cannot be used to prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases. For these purpose, you should use a barrier-method of contraception such as latex male condoms.

Depo Provera Shot Dosage - How to Take Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection?

Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection should be administered only by a doctor.
Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection is taken on any of the first five days after the monthly period, when the chances of being pregnant are very low.
Depo Provera Shot can be given after these five days, once the doctor is certain that you are not pregnant. However, you will need additional contraception such as condoms for the first 7 days after the injection.
In case of breastfeeding mothers, Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection can be administered only after 6 weeks of childbirth to eliminate the risk of transmitting the drug to the nursing child through the breastmilk. If a woman decides to avoid breastfeeding after childbirth, she can take Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection 5 days after delivery.
Women who have had an abortion or miscarriage before the completion of 24 weeks of pregnancy can be administered Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection immediately and they will benefit from the contraceptive effect of the injection right away.  If Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection is administered 7 days after the miscarriage or abortion, you should use an additional method of contraception such as condoms for the first 7 days after the injection.
Depo Provera Shot are given once every 3 months (13 weeks) or once a week depending on your medical condition. Always stick to your regular schedule and do miss out any planned shots because it increases the risk of pregnancy. Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection are administered into the muscle or under the skin such as buttock, or into the thigh or tummy (abdomen).

Medroxyprogesterone Acetate Mechanism of Action – How Does Depo Provera Shot Work?

Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection is meant for the effective birth control in women. Depo Provera Shot contains Medroxyprogesterone Acetate as the active ingredient which is a synthetic version of the female hormone called progesterone.
Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection is used as long-term contraception i.e. a single shot of Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection is effective for about 12 weeks. Medroxyprogesterone Acetate is administered into muscles or skin of the buttocks or upper arm. After injecting Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection, a reserve of Medroxyprogesterone Acetate is created in the muscle, from where the drug is continuously discharged into the bloodstream for the next 12 weeks.
Medroxyprogesterone Acetate averts the chances of pregnancy in women through three main mechanisms. Primarily, it inhibits the discharge of the eggs from the ovaries during the process of ovulation. It also alters the cervical mucus by increasing its thickness at the entrance of the womb, thus rendering it more challenging for the sperm to transverse from the vagina towards the womb. By preventing sperm access to the womb, Medroxyprogesterone Acetate inhibits the fertilization of any eggs which may be released from the ovary.
The hormone also modifies the properties of the womb lining (endometrium), making it less accessible for attachment by any fertilized eggs.

The contraceptive impact of Depo Provera Shot (Depo Provera CI 150mg) persists for three months. Patients are advised to discuss the advantages and associated risks related this method of contraception with your doctor before starting the course of Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection.
Women should pay special attention to the possibility of having children after discontinuing the injections. Women are known to become fertile once again, after the injections are discontinued. However, the time period for fertility to occur differs between patients. Usually, most women should begin ovulating 5 to 6 months after their last Depo Provera Contraceptive Injection, but you may be unable to become pregnant until 10 to 15 months after your last injection (or sometimes even longer).
