Uses of Ketasma Tablets (Generic Ketotifen Fumarate Tablets)

Ketotifen is a type of asthma medication which, when taken every day and used along with other antiasthma medications, may reduce the frequency, severity, and duration of asthma symptoms or attacks in children.
It may also lead to a reduction in daily requirements of other antiasthma medications. Ketotifen is not effective for the prevention or treatment of acute asthma attacks.
Ketasma tablets are also used for the symptomatic treatment of allergic conditions including rhinitis and conjunctivitis. Ketotifen works by inhibiting certain substances in the body that are known to cause inflammation and symptoms of asthma.

Ketasma Tablets (Generic Ketotifen Fumarate Tablets) - Dosage

Generic Ketotifen Fumarate tablets should be administered exactly as suggested by your doctor. Your doctor may recommend a dosage of Ketasma tablets depending on your age, medical requirement, body weight, other medical conditions, and current medications.
For Asthma:
Adults and children 3 years of age and older:
The usual dose is 1 milligram (mg) (1 tablet or 5 milliliters [mL] of syrup) twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening.
Infants and children from 6 months to 3 years of age
Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by the doctor. It is usually 0.25 mL (50 mcg or 0.05 mg) of syrup per kilogram (kg) (110 micrograms [mcg] or 0.110 mg per pound) of body weight twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening.

Ketotifen Fumarate Mechanism of Action – How Do Ketasma Tablets Work?

Ketotifen fumarate's primary mechanism of action involves acting as a non-competitive histamine H1 antagonist and a mast cell stabilizer.
It blocks histamine from binding to H1 receptors, preventing the allergic response, and also prevents mast cells from releasing inflammatory mediators like histamine and leukotrienes. Additionally, ketotifen inhibits the activation and chemotaxis of eosinophils and can reduce the release of other pro-inflammatory substances.

Symptomatic and maintenance asthma therapy (xanthine derivatives, ß2-adrenergic agonists, sodium cromoglycate, corticosteroids) already in use should be continued and should not be reduced immediately when treatment with Zaditen is initiated.
