Uses of Atarax Tablets
Atarax Tablets (Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride Tablets) is indicated in adults for management of anxiety, Premedication, such as preparation for dental procedures and management of pruritus due to allergic conditions such as chronic urticaria and atopic and contact dermatoses.
Atarax is indicated in children for premedication, such as preparation for dental procedures, management of pruritus due to allergic conditions such as chronic urticaria and atopic and contact dermatoses. Atarax Tablets - Dosage

For symptomatic relief of anxiety and tension associated with psychoneurosis and as an adjunct in organic disease states in which anxiety is manifested: in adults, 50-100 mg four times a day; children under 6 years, 50 mg daily in divided doses and over 6 years, 50-100 mg daily in divided doses.
For use in the management of pruritus due to allergic conditions such as chronic urticaria and atopic and contact dermatoses, and in histamine-mediated pruritus: in adults, 25 mg three times a day or four times a day; children under 6 years, 50 mg daily in divided doses and over 6 years, 50-100 mg daily in divided doses.
As a sedative when used as a premedication and following general anesthesia: 50-100 mg in adults, and 0.6 mg/kg in children.
Atarax tablets work effectively if the amount of Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride is maintained at a constant level in the body. Hydroxyzine is not a cortical depressant, but its action may be due to a suppression of activity in certain key regions of the subcortical area of the central nervous system.
Primary skeletal muscle relaxation has been demonstrated experimentally. Bronchodilator activity, and antihistaminic and analgesic effects have been demonstrated experimentally and confirmed clinically.

Contraindications
Atarax tablets are contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride or any inactive ingredient present in tablets. Atarax tablets are also contraindicated in patients with:
history of QT prolongation and/or torsade de pointes, including congenital long QT syndromes; history of cardiac arrhythmias; significant electrolyte imbalance (hypokalaemia, hypomagnesium); significant bradycardia; family history of sudden cardiac death; concomitant use of other QT/QTc-prolonging drugs, or of CYP3A4/5 inhibitors.

Overdose
The most common manifestation of Hydroxyzine overdosage is hypersedation. Other reported signs and symptoms were convulsions, stupor, nausea and vomiting.
As in the management of overdosage with any drug, it should be borne in mind that multiple agents may have been taken.
If vomiting has not occurred spontaneously, it should be induced. Immediate gastric lavage is also recommended. General supportive care, including frequent monitoring of the vital signs and close observation of the patient, is indicated.
Warnings and Precautions
General
Because of its potential antimuscarinic actions, Atarax Tablets (Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride Tablets) should be used with caution in patients suffering from angle closure glaucoma, urinary retention, prostatic hyperplasia, or pyloroduodenal obstruction
Concomitant Use with CNS depressants:
The potentiating action of Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride must be considered when the drug is used in conjunction with CNS depressants such as narcotics, non-narcotic analgesics, hypnotics, sedatives, psychotherapeutic agents, barbiturates or alcohol. Therefore, when CNS depressants are administered concomitantly with Atarax, their dosage should be reduced.
Cardiovascular:
Caution is required in patients with cardiovascular disease and hypertension. Hydroxyzine has been associated with QT/QTc interval prolongation. Rare events of torsade de pointes, cardiac arrest, and sudden death have been reported with hydroxyzine during post market use.
Driving and Operating Machinery:
Since drowsiness may occur with use of this drug, patients should be cauti oned against driving a car or operating dangerous machinery while taking Hydroxyzine.
Endocrine and Metabolism:
Caution is required in patients with hyperthyroidism.
Gastrointestinal:
Caution is required in patients with decreased GI motility and stenosing peptic ulcer. Hepatic/Biliary/Pancreatic: Use in patients with severe liver impairment should be avoided
Neurologic:
Caution is required in patients with seizure disorders, including epilepsy and in patients with myasthenia gravis and dementia.
Ophthalmologic:
Caution is required in patients with increased intraocular pressure.
Side Effects of Atarax Tablets (Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride Tablets
Skin and Appendages: Oral Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride is associated with fixed drug eruptions in postmarketing reports Side effects reported with the administration of hydroxyzine hydrochloride are usually mild and transitory in nature.
Anticholinergic: Dry mouth.
Central Nervous System: Drowsiness is usually transitory and may disappear in a few days of continued therapy or upon reduction of dose.
Involuntary motor activity including rare instances of tremor and convulsions have been reported, usually with doses considerably higher than those recommended.
Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Hydroxyzine hydrochloride, when administered to the pregnant mouse, rat, and rabbit, induced fetal abnormalities in the rat and mouse at doses substantially above the human therapeutic range.
