Ciprofloxacin Dosage - How to Take Zoxan Tablets?

Generic Ciprofloxacin tablets should be administered exactly as suggested by your doctor. Your doctor may recommend a dosage of Zoxan tablets depending on your age, gender, medical requirement, body weight, other medical conditions, and current medications. Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride tablets should be swallowed with a glass of water.
Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets should be administered every 12 hours, preferably 2 hours after a meal. You should be systematic about the daily schedule for the medication such that you take Zoxan tablets at the same time every day, to get the maximum benefit of the medication.
Individuals on a course of treatment with Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets should consume sufficient amount of water during the day to aid the smooth passage of the medicine in the body and to prevent the development of harmful kidney problems.
Medical products or food stuffs which contain minerals such as containing magnesium, aluminum, calcium, iron, or zinc (vitamins/minerals, antacids, quinapril); didanosine; sucralfate; or bismuth subsalicylate, should be taken 6 hours before or 2 hours after the administration of a dose of Zoxan tablets. Do not consume milk, dairy products (such as yogurt or calcium-enriched juice) or indigestion remedies (antacids) 2 hours before and after the administration of Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets because these minerals and food stuffs will interfere with the absorption of Ciprofloxacin HCl in the body, and will affect the efficacy of the antibiotic.
However, milks and dairy products consumed during meal-times will not interfere with the antibiotic efficacy. If you need to take sevelamer during the course of Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets, do not consume it within 4 hours before or after the administration of Zoxan tablets.
The recommended dosage of Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets in adults ranges from 250 mg to 750 mg, administered twice daily. A course of treatment with Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets typically continues for approximately a week. Depending on your medical condition, your doctor may recommend a treatment period of 3 to 14 days of Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride tablets.

Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets for respiratory tract, bone and joint infections
The recommended dosage for the treatment of mild to moderate infections of the respiratory tract (sinus infection or sinusitis and pneumonia), bone and joint infections is 500 mg Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets twice daily. For severe and complicated infections, the optimal dosage is found to be 750 mg of Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets twice daily. Patients with bone infections may need to continue the course of treatment with Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets for a period of at least 3 months to obtain effective therapeutic results.

The recommended dosage for the treatment of infectious diarrhea is 500 mg of Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets, administered twice daily.
Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets for Gonorrhea

Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets for non-gonococcal urethritis
The recommended dosage for the treatment of non-gonococcal urethritis is 750 mg of Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets, administered twice daily. The recommended dosage for the treatment of Chancroid (STD) is 500 mg of Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets, administered twice daily.
Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets for other infections
The recommended dosage for the treatment of other common infections is 500 mg to 750 mg of Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets, administered twice daily.
Continue taking Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride tablets for the recommended treatment period without missing any doses because this may result in antibiotic resistance. Do not stop the treatment temporarily even if you feel that your symptoms have cleared because your symptoms may reduce even before the infection clears.
Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride tablets cannot be used for the treatment of viral infections such as common cold and flu.

Missed Dose

If you miss your regular dose of Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride tablets, take it as soon as you remember. You can continue your regular schedule the next day. If you remember the missed Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets the next day, take your regular dose and skip the missed dose.
Do not take a double dose to compensate the missed dose of Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets.

Ciprofloxacin Mechanism of Action – How Does Zoxan Work?

Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride is an antibiotic medication which is used by patients suffering from bacterial infections of the skin, sinuses, bone, lung, abdomen, kidney, prostate, and bladder.
Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets belongs to the fluoroquinolones class of drugs. The bactericidal action of Ciprofloxacin results from inhibition of the enzymes topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV (both Type II topoisomerases), which are required for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination.

Concomitant administration with Tizanidine is contraindicated. Not recommended in children below the age of 18 years.

Overdose

In the event of acute overdosage, reversible renal toxicity has been reported in some cases. Empty the stomach by inducing vomiting or by gastric lavage. Observe the patient carefully and give supportive treatment, including monitoring of renal function, urinary pH and acidify, if required, to prevent crystalluria and administration of magnesium, aluminum, or calcium containing antacids which can reduce the absorption of Ciprofloxacin. Adequate hydration must be maintained. Only a small amount of ciprofloxacin (less than 10%) is removed from the body after hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.

Warnings and Precautions to be taken when using Generic Ciprofloxacin Tablets

Medical History
Before beginning the treatment with Zoxan tablets (Generic Ciprofloxacin tablets), discuss your personal and family medical history with your doctor. Inform your doctor if you have recently received a live oral typhoid vaccination, heart problems or a history of irregular heartbeat, Long QT syndrome, low blood potassium levels (hypokalemia), Alzheimer disease, a brain or nervous system disorder, muscle or nerve disorder, Myasthenia Gravis, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, a problem with the blood vessels in your brain, diarrhea, a stomach infection, liver problems, kidney problems, increased pressure in your brain, seizures, head injury, brain tumor, diabetes, inflammation of your tendons (arthritis), joint problems, trouble swallowing pills, or skin sensitivity to the sun.
Disabling and Potentially Irreversible Serious Adverse Reactions
Fluoroquinolones, including ciprofloxacin, have been associated with disabling and potentially irreversible serious adverse reactions from different body systems that can occur together in the same patient. Commonly seen adverse reactions include tendinitis, tendon rupture, arthralgia, myalgia, peripheral neuropathy, and central nervous system effects (hallucinations, anxiety, depression, insomnia, severe headaches, and confusion).
Tendinitis and Tendon Rupture
Fluoroquinolones, including ciprofloxacin, have been associated with an increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture in all ages
Central Nervous System Effects
Fluoroquinolones, including ciprofloxacin, have been associated with an increased risk of psychiatric adverse reactions, including: toxic psychosis, psychotic reactions progressing to suicidal ideations/thoughts, hallucinations, or paranoia; depression, or self-injurious behavior such as attempted or completed suicide; anxiety, agitation, or nervousness; confusion, delirium, disorientation, or disturbances in attention; insomnia or nightmares; memory impairment. These reactions may occur following the first dose.
Fluoroquinolones, including ciprofloxacin, have been associated with an increased risk of seizures (convulsions), increased intracranial pressure (pseudotumor cerebri), dizziness, and tremors. Ciprofloxacin, like other fluoroquinolones, is known to trigger seizures or lower the seizure threshold.
Exacerbation of Myasthenia Gravis
Fluoroquinolones, including ciprofloxacin, have neuromuscular blocking activity and may exacerbate muscle weakness in patients with myasthenia gravis. Postmarketing serious adverse reactions, including deaths and requirement for ventilatory support, have been associated with fluoroquinolone use in patients with myasthenia gravis.
Hypersensitivity Reactions
Serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity (anaphylactic) reactions, some following the first dose, have been reported in patients receiving fluoroquinolone therapy, including ciprofloxacin. Some reactions were accompanied by cardiovascular collapse, acute myocardial ischemia with or without myocardial infarction, loss of consciousness, tingling, pharyngeal or facial edema, dyspnea, urticaria, and itching. Only a few patients had a history of hypersensitivity reactions.
Ciprofloxacin HCl Interactions
Before beginning the oral therapy of Zoxan tablets, please tell your doctor about all your present medications including prescription drugs, over the counter medications, mineral supplements, herbal products, and vitamins. Generic Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets are known to have drug interactions with certain other medications. Please inform your doctor if you are taking Cisapride or class 1A or class III antiarrhythmics (quinidine, procainamide, amiodarone, sotalol) because they increase the risk of serious side effects such as irregular heartbeat; Corticosteroids (prednisone) because they may escalate the hazard of tendon problems; Arsenic, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (ibuprofen), or probenecid because it augments the occurance of side effects such as seizures; Anticoagulants (warfarin), arsenic, cyclosporine, methadone, methotrexate, sulfonylureas (glyburide), theophyllines, tizanidine, or xanthines (theophylline) because the activity and the risk of side effects of these drugs may be amplified along with the administration of Zoxan tablets; Hydantoins (phenytoin) or live, oral typhoid vaccine because Zoxan tablets may decrease their efficacy.
Ciprofloxacin HCl Tablets and Alcohol and Caffeine
Avoid or limit the consumption of alcohol and caffeine during the treatment with Generic Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets (Zoxan tablets) and consult your doctor for further information. Zoxan tablets may increase the effect of caffeine such as nervousness, sleeplessness, heart pounding, and anxiety.

Ciprofloxacin Tablets during Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride tablets is a Pregnancy Category C medication. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Ciprofloxacin should not be used during pregnancy unless the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to both the fetus and the mother. An expert review of published data on experiences with ciprofloxacin use during pregnancy by TERIS—the Teratogen Information System—concluded that therapeutic doses during pregnancy are unlikely to pose a substantial teratogenic risk (quantity and quality of data = fair), but the data are insufficient to state that there is no risk.
Ciprofloxacin HCl is known to be transmitted to a baby through breastmilk. Nursing mothers should avoid breastfeeding an infant during the course of Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets. Pregnant women and breast feeding mothers who are undertaking treatment with Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets should consult their doctor and comprehend its therapeutic benefits and associated risks before starting the course of treatment with Ciprofloxacin HCl tablets.
Do not use this medicine without your doctor's consent in case you are pregnant. Stop using this medication and inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant during treatment.
