What are Augmentin Tablets Used For?
Augmentin tablets, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, contains a combination of two active ingredients, amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. Augmentin tablets are penicillin antibiotics which are used to treat and prevent bacterial infections.
Augmentin tablets are typically administered as oral therapy for the treatment and prevention of various bacterial infections such as lower respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia, strep throat) which are caused by Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis, acute bacterial otitis media (ear infection) which are caused by H. influenzae and M. catarrhalis, sinusitis which are caused by H. influenza and M. catarrhalis, skin and skin structure infections (cellulitis, animal bites, tooth infection such as severe dental abscess with spreading cellulitis) which are caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella species, urinary tract infections (cystitis, urinary infection, pyelonephritis gonnorhea) which are caused by E. coli, Klebsiella species, and Enterobacter species, and bone and joint infections (osteomyelitis). Treatment with Augmentin tablets is also recommended in female patients who have developed infections due to difficulties during pregnancy, childbirth, or abortion (puerperal sepsis and septic abortion). Augmentin tablets should not be unnecessarily administered because it can drastically decrease the efficacy of the antibiotic in the patient. Augmentin tablets should be administered in only those patients who display clear symptoms of these specific bacterial infections. Augmentin tablets cannot be used for the treatment of viral infections such as common cold and flu.
Augmentin Dosage - How to Take Augmentin Tablets?
You should use Augmentin tablets exactly as recommended by your doctor. Your doctor may suggest a dosage of Augmentin tablets depending on the type of bacteria, the severity and site of your bacterial infection, age, body weight, renal function, other medical conditions, and current medications.
Augmentin tablets should be taken with a glass of water, at the start of a meal to avoid indigestion problems. Try to maintain a regular schedule for the medication such that you take Augmentin tablets at the same time every day, to get the maximum benefit of the medication. Antibiotics are most effective when its concentration is maintained at a constant level in the body. Make sure Augmentin tablets are administered at definite intervals for effective results. If you’re administered a high dosage of Augmentin tablets, make sure you keep your body hydrated by consuming a sufficient amount of oral fluids.
The recommended daily dosage of Augmentin tablets for most bacterial infections is 375 mg every 8 hours, or 625 mg every 12 hours. Your doctor may alter the dosage of Augmentin tablets and dosage period depending on the type and severity of your infection and your response to treatment. However, the treatment period with Augmentin tablets should not exceed 14 days. The suggested dose for severe and respiratory tract infections is 1000 mg Augmentin tablet every 12 hours or 625 mg Augmentin tablet every 8 hours administered orally. In adults, the maximum recommended daily dosage is 1500 mg amoxicillin/375 mg clavulanic acid.
For most bacterial infections, children weighing more than 40 kg are recommended a maximum recommended daily dosage of 2400 mg amoxicillin/600 mg clavulanic acid. Children weighing less than 25 kg should not be administered Augmentin tablets.
It is imperative that you complete the recommended course of treatment with Augmentin tablets even if you feel better or if it seems the infection has cleared up. Discontinuing the treatment course prematurely or skipping doses will escalate the risk of the infection relapse and the bacteria will grow resistant to the Augmentin antibiotic treatment.
Augmentin Mechanism of Action – How Does Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid Work?
Augmentin belongs to the class of penicillin antibiotics, which contains a combination of two active ingredients, amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. Amoxicillin is a semi-synthetic penicillin (also known as a beta-lactam antibiotic) that prevents the activity of enzymes called penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). These enzymes are essential for the synthesis of bacterial peptidoglycan, which is a fundamental structural element present in the bacterial cell wall. Effective suppression of bacterial peptidoglycan synthesis results in the formation of a fragile cell wall which is susceptible to cell lysis and eventually cell death. However, Amoxicillin is prone to destruction by the activity of beta-lactamases family of enzymes. The beta-lactamase enzymes are synthesized by resistant bacteria, which renders amoxicillin ineffective against the bacteria which produce them. Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactam and has a structure which is similar to penicillin. Clavulanic acid is capable of hindering the activity of certain beta-lactamase enzymes which further prevents these enzymes from inhibiting amoxicillin. Clavulanic acid on its own is not capable of producing a therapeutic antibacterial effect.
