What are Acivir Tablets Used For?

Acivir tablets, manufactured by Cipla Ltd., contain Acyclovir which act as antiviral drugs. Acivir tablets belong to a class of medications known as synthetic nucleoside analogues. Acyclovir tablets are typically administered as oral therapy for the treatment of chickenpox (varicella) or shingles (herpes zoster).
Acyclovir tablets effectively treat shingles by decreasing the pain, reducing the healing time, and restricting the spread of virus and the formation of new lesions.
Acivir tablets can also be used to decrease pain and fasten the healing process of sores or blisters in patients suffering from primary herpes simplex infections including genital herpes. Acyclovir decreases the severity and length of these infections. Acivir tablets helps the sores heal more rapidly, prevents the formation of new sores, and decreases pain/itching. Acivir tablets may also help reduce the duration of after the sores heal. In addition, Acyclovir tablets can decrease the risk of the virus spreading to other parts of the body and causing serious infections in people with a weakened immune system.
Treatment with Acyclovir tablets (Acivir) is usually recommended in prophylaxis and suppressive therapy of herpes simplex in immunocompromised patients, varicella zoster, herpes zoster (shingles) and suppression of recurrent herpes simplex.
Acyclovir tablets cannot cure the patient of genital herpes and does protect against the transmission of genital herpes to other people. Acyclovir tablets are also used to treat and prevent herpes infections of the skin, eyes, nose, and mouth in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and to treat oral hairy leukoplakia (condition that causes hairy white or gray-colored patches on the tongue or inside of the cheek).

Acivir Dosage - How to Take Acyclovir Tablets?

You should use Acivir tablets exactly as recommended by your doctor. Your doctor may suggest a dosage of Acivir tablets depending on the severity of your bacterial infection, body weight, other medical conditions, and current medications. Acyclovir pills should be taken with a glass of water two to five times a day, with or without food.
Try to maintain a regular schedule for the medication such that you take Generic Acyclovir tablets at the same time every day, to get the maximum benefit of the medication.
The recommended dosage of Acyclovir tablets for the treatment of genital herpes is 200 mg every 4 hours (5 times daily) for 7-10 days or 400 mg three times daily for 5-10 days.
Your doctor may alter the dosage of Acivir tablets and dosage period depending on the type and severity of your infection and your response to treatment. The suggested dose for Herpes Zoster (shingles) is 800 mg every 4 hours (5 times daily) for 7 to 10 days administered orally. For chicken pox, the optimal dose for adults is 800 mg 4 times daily administered orally.
During the course of treatment with Acyclovir tablets, you should keep yourself well-hydrated by drinking plenty of oral fluids. This will ensure the efficient functioning of the body's kidneys.
It is imperative that you complete the recommended course of treatment with Acivir tablets even if you feel better or it seems the infection has cleared up. Discontinuing the treatment course prematurely will escalate the risk of the infection relapse and the virus will grow resistant to the treatment.

If you miss your regular dose of Acivir DT tablets (Generic Acyclovir tablets), take it as soon as you remember. You can continue you regular schedule the next day.
If you remember the missed Acivir tablets the next day, take your regular dose and skip the missed dose.
Do not take a double dose to compensate the missed dose.

Mechanism of Action – How Does Acyclovir Work?

Acivir (Generic Acyclovir tablets) is an antiviral drug which belongs to a class of medications known as synthetic nucleoside analogue. Acivir tablets inhibits the viral replication of the herpes viruses herpes simplex 1 and 2 (cold sores and genital herpes), varicella-zoster (shingles and chickenpox), and Epstein-Barr virus (mononucleosis).
Viruses are known to invade the living cells and using the cells’ machinery to replicate and grow in the body. The virus converts Acyclovir to an active form, which the virus can then consume to manufacture DNA, rather than using the cell’s nucleoside like it usually practices.
Integration of active acyclovir into new viral DNA inhibits the production of the viral DNA. Virally infected cells are known to absorb additional Acyclovir as compared to normal cells and convert more Acyclovir to its active form for its DNA replication usage. This mechanism extends the time period of Acyclovir’s antiviral activity.
