Sumatriptan Succinate tablets are anti-migraine medications which belong to a group of drugs called triptans. Contraindications

Suminat tablets are contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to Sumatriptan Succinate (angioedema and anaphylaxis seen) or any inactive ingredient present in Suminat tablets. are contraindicated in the following cases:

  • Ischemic coronary artery disease (CAD) (angina pectoris, history of myocardial infarction, or documented silent ischemia) or coronary artery vasospasm, including Prinzmetal's angina
  • Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome or arrhythmias associated with other cardiac accessory conduction pathway disorders
  • History of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) or history of hemiplegic or basilar migraine because these patients are at a higher risk of stroke
  • Peripheral vascular disease
  • Ischemic bowel disease
  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Recent use (i.e., within 24 hours) of ergotamine-containing medication, ergot-type medication (such as dihydroergotamine or methysergide), or another 5-hydroxytryptamine1 (5-HT1) agonist
  • Concurrent administration of a monoamine oxidase (MAO)-A inhibitor or recent (within 2 weeks) use of an MAO-A inhibitor
  • Severe hepatic impairment

 

Overdose

In case of an overdose of Sumatriptan Succinate tablets, please seek emergency help. The symptoms of an overdose of Sumatriptan Succinate tablets include tremors or shaking, skin redness, breathing problems, blue-colored lips or fingernails, vision problems, watery eyes or mouth, weakness, lack of coordination, or seizure (convulsions).

Warnings and Precautions to be taken when using Sumatriptan Succinate Tablets

Medical History

Inform your doctor if you have ischemic bowel disease, severe liver disease, severe high blood pressure, a history of heart disease, angina, circulation problems, heart attack or stroke, ischemic or vasospastic coronary artery disease (CAD), strong family history of CAD, hypercholesterolemia, smoker, obesity, diabetes, female with surgical or physiological menopause, male over 40 years of age.
Allergy

Sumatriptan Succinate Interactions

Avoid taking Suminat tablets if you have a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), or phenelzine (Nardil) in the past 14 days. Sumatriptan Succinate tablets should not be administered within 24 hours of taking almotriptan (Axert), eletriptan (Relpax), frovatriptan (Frova), rizatriptan (Maxalt), naratriptan (Amerge), zolmitriptan (Zomig), or ergot medicine such as methysergide (Sansert), ergotamine (Ergomar, Ergostat, Cafergot, Ercaf, Wigraine), dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45, Migranal Nasal Spray), ergonovine (Ergotrate), or methylergonovine (Methergine).
Sumatriptan Succinate Tablets and Alcohol
Avoid or limit the consumption of alcohol during the treatment with Generic Sumatriptan Succinate tablets (Suminat tablets) because it may increase the risk of certain side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, lightheadedness, and fainting.
Sumatriptan Succinate Tablets - Driving and Other Activities
Sumatriptan Succinate tablets may make you light-headed or impair your vision. Avoid activities such as driving, using machinery, or performing any activity that requires complete vigilance or perfect vision until you are sure about your safety.
Live Vaccinations, Surgery and Regular Medical Tests
If you plan to have live vaccinations, surgery or any dental procedure, inform your doctor, anesthetist, or dentist about your course of Sumatriptan Succinate tablets. Side Effects of Sumatriptan Succinate Tablets

The following side effects have been reported during the course of treatment with Suminat tablets (Generic Sumatriptan Succinate tablets):

  • Cardiovascular System- chest pain or heavy feeling, increased heart rate
  • Central Nervous System- headache, confusion, problems in speech or balance, agitation, hallucinations, lack of coordination, seizures (convulsions), dizziness, sleepiness, anxiety
  • ENT- problems with vision, sneezing, runny nose, congestion, cough, trouble swallowing, hearing problems or loss of hearing, wheezing
  • Gastrointestinal System- nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, sudden and severe stomach pain
  • Genitourinary System- change in the amount of urine

Sumatriptan Succinate (Suminat tablets) has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category C.
It is unknown if the administration of Sumatriptan Succinate Tablets during pregnancy will cause any harmful defects in the baby. Women should consult their doctor before taking Sumatriptan Succinate tablets during pregnancy. Small amounts of Sumatriptan Succinate is transmitted to a baby through breastmilk and may result in adverse effects on the feeding child. Nursing mothers should avoid nursing an infant during the course of Sumatriptan Succinate tablets.
Data from a prospective pregnancy exposure registry and epidemiological studies of pregnant women have not detected an increased frequency of birth defects or a consistent pattern of birth defects among women exposed to sumatriptan compared with the general population.
In developmental toxicity studies in rats and rabbits, oral administration of Sumatriptan to pregnant animals was associated with embryolethality, fetal abnormalities, and pup mortality.
