Mesacol Mechanism of Action – How Does Mesalamine OD Work?
Mesalamine is an anti-inflammatory agent which belongs to the aminosalicylates class of medications. Mesalamine is the active element of the compound called sulfasalazine. Upon bacterial action in the colon, Sulfasalazine gets separated into Sulfapyridine and Mesalamine.
Mesacol OD Tablets (Generic Mesalamine OD Tablets) are used to treat the inflammatory conditions of the digestive tract, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease. During ulcerative colitis, there is an uncontrolled production of inflammation-inducing chemicals such as prostaglandins the colon. Prostaglandins are released due to enzymatic actions of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes. Patients with ulcerative colitis are found to have a high level of these enzymes in their blood.
Mesalamine acts on the intestinal epithelial cells lining the organ which are responsible for the production of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes, preventing them from producing and secreting natural chemical substances such as prostaglandins which cause inflammation and related symptoms.
This suppressive mechanism of prostaglandin production decreases inflammation and allows the intestine to recover from the inflammatory damage, thereby preventing the recurrence of the inflammatory symptoms.
