Cosart is an oral medication used for the treatment of high blood pressure. Losartan Potassium tablets belongs to the class of drugs known as angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) which relaxes the blood vessels, thus enabling uninterrupted blood flow.
Angiotensin is a metabolite which is produced in the blood due to the activity of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). ACE is a potent enzyme that interacts with the receptors for angiotensin located in many tissues but largely on smooth muscle cells of blood vessels.
When the angiotensin enzyme attaches to the receptors present on the cells, it results in the contraction of the smooth muscle cells. This contraction further causes the constriction of blood vessels (vasoconstrict) which makes blood flow difficult and eventually leads to an increase in blood pressure (hypertension).

Contraindications

Overdose

Significant lethality was observed in mice and rats after oral administration of 1000 mg/kg and 2000 mg/kg, respectively, about 44 and 170 times the maximum recommended human dose on a mg/m2 basis.
Limited data are available in regard to overdosage in humans. The most likely manifestation of overdosage would be hypotension and tachycardia; bradycardia could occur from parasympathetic (vagal) stimulation. If symptomatic hypotension should occur, supportive treatment should be instituted.
Neither Losartan Potassium nor its active metabolite can be removed by hemodialysis.
