Syndopa tablets, also known as Levodopa and Carbidopa generic, is used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and symptoms which are related to Parkinson's disease such as muscle stiffness, tremors, spasms, and poor muscle control.

Syndopa tablets, manufactured by Sun Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Syndopa tablets are commonly used as oral therapy for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and Parkinson's-like symptoms such as trembling, body rigidness, difficulty moving. Parkinson's disease is known to develop in patients diagnosed with a low level of dopamine neurotransmitter activity. Levodopa, which belongs to a class of medications known as central nervous system agents, is converted to dopamine in the brain and thus controls the body movement. Carbidopa, on the other hand, is a decarboxylase inhibitor, which prevents the premature breakdown of Levodopa before it reaches the brain so that more Levodopa can cross the blood brain barrier and enter the brain. Levodopa and Carbidopa tablets may be used alone for the treatment of Parkinson's disease or it may be used in combination with other medications.

Levodopa and Carbidopa Dosage - How to Take Syndopa Tablets?

Generic Levodopa and Carbidopa tablets should be administered exactly as suggested by your doctor. Your doctor may recommend a dosage of Syndopa tablets depending on your age, medical requirement, body weight, other medical conditions, and current medications.
Levodopa and Carbidopa tablets should be orally administered on an empty stomach, minimum 1 to 2 hours before meals. Eating a meal with high-protein content may obstruct the absorption of the medication in the system. Syndopa tablets can be taken 3 to 4 times a day, preferably starting with the first dose in the morning. To decrease the risk of side effects of excess dopamine in the brain, your doctor may start your treatment course by recommending a low dosage level and slowly increasing it to the most effective dosage. Overdose

General supportive measures should be employed, along with immediate gastric lavage. Intravenous fluids should be administered judiciously and an adequate airway maintained. Electrocardiographic monitoring should be instituted and the patient carefully observed for the development of arrhythmias; if required, appropriate antiarrhythmic therapy should be given.

Side Effects of Syndopa Tablets

  • Cardiovascular System- chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Central Nervous System- confusion, drowsiness, headache, sleeping problems, depression, hallucinations, mental or mood changes, severe lightheadedness, fainting, suicidal thoughts, seizures
  • ENT- sore throat, changes in vision
  • Gastrointestinal System- constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, nausea, stomach upset, vomiting, blood in vomit, severe abdominal pain

Levodopa and Carbidopa Tablets During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Levodopa and Carbidopa tablets (Syndopa) has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category C.
No teratogenic effects were observed in a study in mice receiving up to 20 times the maximum recommended human dose of Syndopa. There was a decrease in the number of live pups delivered by rats receiving approximately two times the maximum recommended human dose of Carbidopa and approximately five times the maximum recommended human dose of Levodopa during organogenesis. Levodopa and Carbidopa tablets caused both visceral and skeletal malformations in rabbits at all doses and ratios of Carbidopa/Levodopa tested.
There are no adequate or well-controlled studies in pregnant women. It has been reported from individual cases that Levodopa crosses the human placental barrier, enters the fetus, and is metabolized. Carbidopa concentrations in fetal tissue appeared to be minimal. Use of Levodopa and Carbidopa tablets in women of childbearing potential requires that the anticipated benefits of the drug be weighed against possible hazards to mother and child.
