The active ingredient present in Oriel tablets is Levocetirizine Hydrochloride. Each tablet of Oriel contains Levocetirizine Hydrochloride equivalent to 5 mg of Levocetirizine.
Uses of Oriel Tablets (Generic Levocetirizine Hydrochloride Tablets)
Levocetirizine dihydrochloride tablets are indicated for the treatment of the uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children 6 years of age and older. Levocetirizine is also used to relieve the symptoms of hay fever .
It is an antihistamine that works by preventing the effects of a substance called histamine, which is produced by the body. Histamine can cause itching, sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes. It can also close up the bronchial tubes (air passages of the lungs) and make breathing difficult. Histamine can also cause some persons to have hives, with severe itching of the skin.
Levocetirizine Hydrochloride Tablets (Oriel Tablets) - Dosage
Generic Levocetirizine Hydrochloride tablets should be administered exactly as suggested by your doctor. Your doctor may recommend a dosage of Oriel tablets depending on your age, medical requirement, body weight, other medical conditions, and current medications.
Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria:
Adults and Children 12 Years of Age and Older:
The recommended dose of Levocetirizine Hydrochloride is 5 mg (1 tablet) once daily in the evening. Some patients may be adequately controlled by 2.5 mg (1/2 tablet) once daily in the evening.
Children 6 to 11 Years of Age
The recommended dose of Levocetirizine Hydrochloride is 2.5 mg (1/2 tablet) once daily in the evening. The 2.5 mg dose should not be exceeded because the systemic exposure with 5 mg is approximately twice that of adults.
Usual Adult Dose for Allergic Rhinitis:
Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis (OTC): 5 mg orally once a day in the evening; some patients may be adequately controlled on 2.5 mg once a day
Usual Pediatric Dose for Allergic Rhinitis:
Perennial Allergic Rhinitis:
6 months to 2 years: 1.25 mg orally once a day in the evening. The recommended dose in pediatric patients 6 months to 2 years should not be exceeded.

6 to 11 years: 2.5 mg orally once a day in the evening
12 years or older: 5 mg orally once a day in the evening; some patients may be adequately controlled on 2.5 mg once a day
Avoid use in patients less than 6 years for this indication.
Oriel tablets work effectively if the amount of Levocetirizine is maintained at a constant level in the body. You should be systematic about the daily schedule for the medication such that you take tablets at about the same time every day, to get the maximum benefit of the medication. Continue taking Oriel tablets without missing any doses for the recommended treatment period and do not stop the treatment suddenly even if you feel better.

Missed Dose

Storage Instructions for Oriel Tablets (Levocetirizine Hydrochloride Tablets)
Store Oriel tablets at controlled room temperature (20°C to 25°C),protected from heat, moisture, and sunlight. Excursions are permitted from 15°C to 30°C.
Retain the original packing of the medication and do not consume past its expiration date printed on the blister pack. Keep the pack of Levocetirizine Hydrochloride tablets away from the reach of children and pets. Do not dispose Oriel tablets along with domestic waste or sewage. Contraindications
Oriel tablets are contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Levocetirizine Hydrochloride or any inactive ingredient present in tablets. Oriel tablets are also contraindicated in the following cases:
Patients with end-stage renal disease (CLCR < 10 mL/min) and patients undergoing hemodialysis.
Children 6 months to 11 years of age with impaired renal function.
Overdose
Overdosage has been reported with Levocetirizine Hydrochloride Tablets (Oriel Tablets).
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness in adults. In children agitation and restlessness may initially occur, followed by drowsiness. There is no known specific antidote to Levocetirizine Hydrochloride Tablets (Oriel Tablets). Should overdose occur, symptomatic or supportive treatment is recommended. Levocetirizine Hydrochloride Tablets is not effectively removed by dialysis, and dialysis will be ineffective unless a dialyzable agent has been concomitantly ingested.
Warnings and Precautions
Somnolence
In clinical trials the occurrence of somnolence, fatigue, and asthenia has been reported in some patients under therapy with Levocetirizine Hydrochloride. Patients should be cautioned against engaging in hazardous occupations requiring complete mental alertness, and motor coordination such as operating machinery or driving a motor vehicle after ingestion of levocetirizine dihydrochloride.
Urinary Retention
Urinary retention has been reported postmarketing with Levocetirizine Hydrochloride. Levocetirizine Hydrochloride should be used with caution in patients with predisposing factors of urinary retention (e.g. spinal cord lesion, prostatic hyperplasia) as levocetirizine dihydrochloride may increase the risk of urinary retention. Discontinue Levocetirizine Hydrochloride if urinary retention occurs.
Risk of New Onset Pruritus After Discontinuation of Levocetirizine Hydrochloride Tablets (Oriel Tablets)
Cases of pruritus after discontinuation of Levocetirizine Hydrochloride Tablets (Oriel Tablets) have been reported in the postmarketing setting in patients where pruritus was not present before initiation of Levocetirizine Hydrochloride. Pruritus occurred within a few days of discontinuing Levocetirizine Hydrochloride among patients who used levocetirizine dihydrochloride long-term (e.g., few months to years).
Side Effects of Levocetirizine Hydrochloride (Oriel Tablets)
The most common side efffects with an incidence rate of 2% or more and greater than placebo were somnolence, nasopharyngitis, fatigue, dry mouth, and pharyngitis in subjects 12 years of age and older, and pyrexia, somnolence, cough, and epistaxis in children 6 to 12 years of age.
Levocetirizine Hydrochloride During Pregnancy
Levocetirizine Hydrochloride (Oriel tablets) has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category B.
In rats and rabbits, levocetirizine was not teratogenic at oral doses up to 200 and 120 mg/kg, respectively (approximately 320 and 390 times the maximum recommended daily oral dose in adults on a mg/m2 basis).
There are, however, no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, Levocetirizine Hydrochloride (Oriel tablets) should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.
Do not use this medicine without your doctor's consent in case you are pregnant. Stop using this medication and inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant during treatment.
Nursing Considerations
There are no data on the presence of Levocetirizine in human milk, the effects on the breastfed infant, or the effects on milk production. However, Cetirizine has been reported to be present in human breast milk. In mice and beagle dogs, studies indicated that Cetirizine was excreted in milk. When a drug is present in animal milk, it is likely the drug will be present in human milk. The developmental and health benefits of breastfeeding should be considered along with the mother’s clinical need for Levocetirizine Hydrochloride (Oriel tablets) and any potential adverse effects on the breastfed child from Levocetirizine Hydrochloride tablets or from the underlying maternal condition.
