Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient
The active ingredient present in Lamivir HBV and Lamivir tablets is Lamivudine. Each tablet of Lamivir HBV and Lamivir contains 100 mg or 150 mg of Lamivudine respectively.
Uses of Lamivir-HBV and Lamivir Tablets
Lamivir Tablets (Lamivudine 150 mg) is used in combination with other medicines for the treatment of the infection caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV is the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Lamivudine will not cure or prevent HIV infection or AIDS. It helps keep HIV from reproducing and appears to slow down the destruction of the immune system. This may help delay the development of serious health problems usually related to AIDS or HIV disease from occurring. Lamivudine will not keep you from spreading HIV to other people. People who receive this medicine may continue to have other problems usually related to AIDS or HIV disease.
Lamivir HBV (Lamivudine 100 mg) is also used to treat chronic (long-term) hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.

Mechanism of Action
Lamivudine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that works by interfering with the replication of HIV and HBV (Hepatitis B virus).
It is converted into its active form, lamivudine triphosphate (3TC-TP), inside cells. This metabolite then acts as a chain terminator during DNA synthesis, preventing the virus from replicating.

Warnings and Precautions
- Co-infected HIV-1/HBV Patients: Emergence of lamivudine-resistant HBV variants associated with lamivudine-containing antiretroviral regimens has been reported.
- Hepatic decompensation, some fatal, has occurred in HIV-1/HCV co-infected patients receiving interferon and ribavirin-based regimens. Monitor for treatment-associated toxicities. Discontinue Lamivudine as medically appropriate and consider dose reduction or discontinuation of interferon alfa, ribavirin, or both.
- Pancreatitis: Use with caution in pediatric patients with a history of pancreatitis or other significant risk factors for pancreatitis. Treatment with lamivudine should be stopped immediately if clinical signs, symptoms, or laboratory abnormalities suggestive of pancreatitis occur.
- Immune reconstitution syndrome and redistribution/accumulation of body fat have been reported in patients treated with combination antiretroviral therapy.
- Lower virologic suppression rates and increased risk of viral resistance were observed in pediatric subjects who received lamivudine oral solution concomitantly with other antiretroviral oral solutions compared with those who received tablets.
- Effects on Ability to Drive and Use Machines:No studies on the effects on the ability to drive and use machines have been performed. However, individuals should be informed that dizziness has been reported during treatment with lamivudine.
