Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient

The active ingredient present in Lamivir HBV and Lamivir tablets is Lamivudine. Each tablet of Lamivir HBV and Lamivir contains 100 mg or 150 mg of Lamivudine respectively.

Uses of Lamivir-HBV and Lamivir Tablets

Lamivir Tablets (Lamivudine 150 mg) is used in combination with other medicines for the treatment of the infection caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV is the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Lamivudine will not cure or prevent HIV infection or AIDS. It helps keep HIV from reproducing and appears to slow down the destruction of the immune system. This may help delay the development of serious health problems usually related to AIDS or HIV disease from occurring. Lamivudine will not keep you from spreading HIV to other people. People who receive this medicine may continue to have other problems usually related to AIDS or HIV disease.
Lamivir HBV (Lamivudine 100 mg) is also used to treat chronic (long-term) hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.

Lamivir-HBV and Lamivir Tablets - Dosage

Generic Lamivudine tablets should be administered exactly as suggested by your doctor. Your doctor may recommend a dosage of Lamivir HBV and Lamivir tablets depending on your age, medical requirement, body weight, other medical conditions, and current medications.
Lamivir Tablets: The recommended dosage of Lamivir in HIV-1 infected adults is 300 mg daily, administered as either 150 mg taken orally twice daily, or 300 mg taken orally once daily with or without food.
If Lamivudine is administered to a patient infected with HIV-1 and HBV, the dosage indicated for HIV-1 therapy should be used as part of an appropriate combination regimen Dosing of Lamivir is adjusted in accordance with renal function.
Lamivir-HBV Tablets: The recommended oral dose of Lamivir-HBV Tablets in adults is 100 mg once daily. Lamivir-HBV Tablets has not been evaluated in pediatric patients. For patients with Renal Impairment, it is recommended that doses of lamivudine be adjusted.
Lamivir HBV and Lamivir tablets work effectively if the amount of Lamivudine is maintained at a constant level in the body. You should be systematic about the daily schedule for the medication such that you take tablets at about the same time every day, to get the maximum benefit of the medication. Continue taking Lamivir HBV and Lamivir tablets without missing any doses for the recommended treatment period and do not stop the treatment suddenly even if you feel better.

Please consult your doctor for exact dosing instructions. Lamivir HBV and Lamivir tablets (Generic Lamivudine tablets) should be administered in the dose prescribed by the doctor and for the duration recommended by the doctor.

Missed Dose

If you forget to take your regular tablet dose on time, take it whenever you remember.
If you remember the next day, skip the missed dose and take your scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose to compensate the missed dose.

Mechanism of Action

Lamivudine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that works by interfering with the replication of HIV and HBV (Hepatitis B virus).
It is converted into its active form, lamivudine triphosphate (3TC-TP), inside cells. This metabolite then acts as a chain terminator during DNA synthesis, preventing the virus from replicating.

Overdose

There is no known specific treatment for overdose with EPIVIR. If overdose occurs, the patient should be monitored and standard supportive treatment applied as required. Because a negligible amount of lamivudine was removed via (4-hour) hemodialysis, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, and automated peritoneal dialysis, it is not known if continuous hemodialysis would provide clinical benefit in a lamivudine overdose event

Warnings and Precautions

  • Co-infected HIV-1/HBV Patients: Emergence of lamivudine-resistant HBV variants associated with lamivudine-containing antiretroviral regimens has been reported.

Discontinue Lamivudine as medically appropriate and consider dose reduction or discontinuation of interferon alfa, ribavirin, or both.
  • Pancreatitis: Use with caution in pediatric patients with a history of pancreatitis or other significant risk factors for pancreatitis. Treatment with lamivudine should be stopped immediately if clinical signs, symptoms, or laboratory abnormalities suggestive of pancreatitis occur.
  • Immune reconstitution syndrome and redistribution/accumulation of body fat have been reported in patients treated with combination antiretroviral therapy.
  • Lower virologic suppression rates and increased risk of viral resistance were observed in pediatric subjects who received lamivudine oral solution concomitantly with other antiretroviral oral solutions compared with those who received tablets.
