Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is a naturally occurring hormone which is responsible for the sexual development in both males and females, along with follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). These three hormones are commonly used for the treatment of infertility. HCG mimics the actions of the pituitary hormone, LH, stimulating the production of gonadal steroid hormones by activating the interstitial cells (Leydig cells) of the testis to produce androgens and the corpus luteum of the ovary to produce progesterone. Androgen production in men results in the development of secondary sexual characteristics and may activate the testicular descent when there is no other anatomical obstruction for successful descent into the scrotal sac.
