Fincar Tablets (Generic Finasteride 5 mg) is used to treat men who have symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate.

Uses of Fincar Tablets

Finasteride 5 mg tablets (Fincar) is used for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate to improve urinary symptoms by reducing prostate size, and may delay the need for surgery.

Fincar Tablets - Dosage

Generic Finasteride 5 mg tablets should be administered exactly as suggested by your doctor. Your doctor may recommend a dosage of Fincar tablets depending on your age, medical requirement, body weight, other medical conditions, and current medications.
Fincar tablets may be administered with or without meals.

Monotherapy:
The recommended dose of Fincar is one tablet (5 mg) once a day, with or without meals.

Combination with Alpha-Blocker:
The recommended dose of Fincar tablet is one tablet (5 mg) taken once a day in combination with the alpha-blocker doxazosin.
Fincar tablets work effectively if the amount of Finasteride is maintained at a constant level in the body. Missed Dose

Finasteride Mechanism of Action

The development and enlargement of the prostate gland is dependent on the potent androgen, 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Type II 5alpha-reductase metabolizes testosterone to DHT in the prostate gland, liver and skin. DHT induces androgenic effects by binding to androgen receptors in the cell nuclei of these organs.
Finasteride has no affinity for the androgen receptor. In man, the 5á-reduced steroid metabolites in blood and urine are decreased after administration of finasteride.

Store Fincar Tablets at controlled room temperature (20°C to 25°C),protected from heat, moisture, and sunlight. Excursions are permitted from 15°C to 30°C.

Contraindications

Fincar tablets are contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Finasteride or any inactive ingredient present in Fincar tablets. Fincar tablets are contraindicated in the following cases:
Pregnancy: Finasteride use is contraindicated in women when they are or may potentially be pregnant. Because of the ability of Type II 5 alpha-reductase inhibitors to inhibit the conversion of testosterone to 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), Finasteride may cause abnormalities of the external genitalia of a male foetus of a pregnant woman who receives Finasteride. If this drug is used during pregnancy, or if pregnancy occurs while taking this drug, the pregnant woman should be apprised of the potential hazard to the male foetus.

Overdose

In clinical studies, single doses of Finasteride (Fincar 5 mg tablets) up to 400 mg and multiple doses of Finasteride up to 80 mg/day for three months did not result in adverse reactions. Until further experience is obtained, no specific treatment for an overdose with Finasteride can be recommended.
Significant lethality was observed in male and female mice at single oral doses of 1500 mg/m2 (500 mg/kg) and in female and male rats at single oral doses of 2360 mg/m2 (400 mg/kg) and 5900 mg/m2 (1000 mg/kg), respectively.

Warnings and Precautions

Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Levels:
Fincar reduces serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels by approximately 50%. However, any confirmed increase in PSA while on Finasteride (Fincar 5 mg tablets) may signal the presence of prostate cancer and should be evaluated, even if those values are still within the normal range for men not taking a 5a-reductase inhibitor.
Fincar may increase the risk of high-grade prostate cancer
Women should not handle crushed or broken Fincar tablets when they are pregnant or may potentially be pregnant due to potential risk to a male fetus.
Fincar is not indicated for use in pediatric patients or women
Prior to initiating treatment with Fincar for BPH, consideration should be given to other urological conditions that may cause similar symptoms

Side Effects of Finasteride 5 mg (Fincar tablets)

The drug-related side effects, reported in 1% or more in patients treated with Finasteride 5 mg (Fincar tablets) and greater than in patients treated with placebo over a 4-year study are: impotence, decreased libido, decreased volume of ejaculate, breast enlargement, breast tenderness and rash.

Finasteride During Pregnancy

Finasteride has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category X.
Fincar is contraindicated for use in women who are or may become pregnant. In animal studies, finasteride caused abnormal development of external genitalia in male fetuses.
If this drug is used during pregnancy, or if the patient becomes pregnant while taking this drug, the patient should be apprised of the potential hazard to the male fetus. Finasteride is not indicated for use in women. It is not known whether finasteride is excreted in human milk.
