Eltroxin Tablets (Levothyroxine Sodium Tablets) - Product Information
Eltroxin Tablets (Levothyroxine Sodium Tablets) are used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone.
This medicine is also used to help decrease the size of enlarged thyroid glands (also called a goiter).
Levothyroxine is also used together with surgery and radioiodine treatment to treat a type of thyroid cancer called thyroid-dependent well-differentiated thyroid cancer.
Eltroxin tablets are manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Limited, India in the strengths of 25 mcg, 50 mcg, and 100 mcg.
We also have in stock Thyro3 Tablets (Liothyronine Sodium) which is also used as oral replacement therapy for the treatment of myxedema coma in hypothyroid patients to restore the thyroid levels back to normal. Thyro3 25 mcg tablets are also useful for the treatment and prevention of goiter, an endocrine disorder which is characterized by an enlarged thyroid gland.

Uses of Eltroxin Tablets
Eltroxin Tablets is L-thyroxine (T4) indicated for:
- Hypothyroidism: As replacement therapy in primary (thyroidal), secondary (pituitary), and tertiary (hypothalamic) congenital or acquired hypothyroidism.
- Pituitary Thyrotropin (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone, TSH) Suppression: As an adjunct to surgery and radioiodine therapy in the management of thyrotropin-dependent well-differentiated thyroid cancer.
Limitations of Use:
- Not indicated for suppression of benign thyroid nodules and nontoxic diffuse goiter in iodine-sufficient patients.
- Not indicated for treatment of hypothyroidism during the recovery phase of subacute thyroiditis.
Eltroxin Tablets - Dosage
Generic Levothyroxine Sodium tablets should be administered exactly as suggested by your doctor. Your doctor may recommend a dosage of Eltroxin tablets depending on your age, medical requirement, body weight, other medical conditions, and current medications.
Administer once daily, on an empty stomach, one-half to one hour before breakfast with a full glass of water.
Administer at least 4 hours before or after drugs that are known to interfere with absorption.
Evaluate the need for dose adjustments when regularly administering within one hour of certain foods that may affect absorption.
Starting dose depends on a variety of factors, including age, body weight, cardiovascular status, concomitant medical conditions (including pregnancy), concomitant medications, co-administered food, and the specific nature of the condition being treated. Peak therapeutic effect may not be attained for 4 to 6 weeks
Adequacy of therapy determined with periodic monitoring of TSH and/or T4 as well as clinical status.
Eltroxin tablets work effectively if the amount of Levothyroxine Sodium is maintained at a constant level in the body. You should be systematic about the daily schedule for the medication such that you take Thyronorm tablets at about the same time every day, to get the maximum benefit of the medication. Continue taking Generic Thyroxine Sodium tablets without missing any doses for the recommended treatment period and do not stop the treatment suddenly even if you feel better.
Please consult your doctor for exact dosing instructions. Eltroxin tablets (Generic Thyroxine Sodium tablets) should be administered in the dose prescribed by the doctor and for the duration recommended by the doctor.
Missed Dose
If you forget to take your regular Eltroxin tablet dose on time, take it whenever you remember.
If you remember the next day, skip the missed dose and take your scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose to compensate the missed dose.
Eltroxin Tablets - Mechanism of Action
Levothyroxine provides a source of thyroid hormone in people who may not make enough on their own.
Levothyroxine may also be used for thyroid cancer. Taking it tells the thyroid gland to stop producing its own hormones, which can help stop the growth of thyroid cancer.

Contraindications
Eltroxin tablets are contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Thyroxine Sodium or any inactive ingredient present in tablets. Eltroxin Tablets are contraindicated in the following cases:
- Patients with untreated subclinical thyrotoxicosis (suppressed serum TSH with normal L- Triiodothyronine/Liothyronine [T3] and L-Thyroxine/Levothyroxine [T4] levels) or overt thyrotoxicosis of any etiology.
- Patients with acute myocardial infarction.
- Patients with uncorrected/untreated adrenal insufficiency, as thyroid hormones increase tissue demands for adrenocortical hormones and may thereby precipitate acute adrenal crisis by increasing the metabolic clearance of glucocorticoids
- Pregnant women being treated with drugs for hyperthyroidism, such as methimazole and propylthiourac.
Overdose
Excessive doses of Eltroxin Tablets (Generic Thyroxine Sodium Tablets) result in a hypermetabolic state indistinguishable from thyrotoxicosis of endogenous origin. Signs and symptoms of thyrotoxicosis include exophthalmic goiter, weight loss, increased appetite, palpitations, nervousness, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, sweating, tachycardia, increased pulse and blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias, angina pectoris, tremors, insomnia, heat intolerance, fever, menstrual irregularities, irritability, hyperactivity, headache, mydriasis, tachypnoea, convulsions and seizures.
In addition, confusion and disorientation may occur. Cerebral embolism, shock, coma, and death have been reported. Symptoms are not always evident or may not appear until several days after ingestion of Levothyroxine Sodium.
Warnings and Precautions
Cardiac adverse reactions in the elderly and in patients with underlying cardiovascular disease:
Initiate Eltroxin at less than the full replacement dose because of the increased risk of cardiac adverse reactions, including atrial fibrillation.
Myxedema coma:
Do not use oral thyroid hormone drug products to treat myxedema coma.
Acute adrenal crisis in patients with concomitant adrenal insufficiency:
Treat with replacement glucocorticoids prior to initiation of Eltroxin treatment.
Prevention of hyperthyroidism or incomplete treatment of hypothyroidism:
Proper dose titration and careful monitoring is critical to prevent the persistence of hypothyroidism or the development of hyperthyroidism.
Worsening of diabetic control:
Therapy in patients with diabetes mellitus may worsen glycemic control and result in increased antidiabetic agent or insulin requirements. Carefully monitor glycemic control after starting, changing, or discontinuing thyroid hormone therapy.
Decreased bone mineral density associated with thyroid hormone over- replacement:
Over-replacement can increase bone resorption and decrease bone mineral density. Give the lowest effective dose.
Side Effects of Eltroxin Tablets
Side effects associated with Eltroxin therapy are primarily those of hyperthyroidism due to therapeutic overdosage: arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, dyspnea, muscle spasm, headache, nervousness, irritability, insomnia, tremors, muscle weakness, increased appetite, weight loss, diarrhea, heat intolerance, menstrual irregularities, and skin rash.
Side effects include the following:
- General: fatigue, increased appetite, weight loss, heat intolerance, fever, excessive sweating
- Central nervous system: headache, hyperactivity, nervousness, anxiety, irritability, emotional lability, insomnia

Levothyroxine Sodium (Thyroxine Sodium) During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Thyroxine Sodium has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category A.
The clinical experience, including data from postmarketing studies, in pregnant women treated with oral Levothyroxine to maintain euthyroid state have not reported increased rates of major birth defects, miscarriages, or other adverse maternal or fetal outcomes. There are risks to the mother and fetus associated with untreated hypothyroidism in pregnancy. Since TSH levels may increase during pregnancy, TSH should be monitored and Eltroxin tablets dosage adjusted during pregnancy.
Animal reproductive studies have not been conducted with Levothyroxine Sodium. Levothyroxine sodium should not be discontinued during pregnancy and hypothyroidism diagnosed during pregnancy should be promptly treated.
Published studies report that Eltroxin tablets (Levothyroxine Sodium) is present in human milk following the administration of oral levothyroxine. No adverse effects on the breastfed infant have been reported and there is no information on the effects of Levothyroxine on milk production. Adequate levothyroxine treatment during lactation may normalize milk production in hypothyroid lactating mothers with low milk supply.
