Gravol tablets contain Dimenhydrinate as the active ingredient, which belongs to a class of medications known as antihistamines. Gravol tablets are beneficial for the treatment and prevention of the symptoms of motion sickness such as vomiting, dizziness. Dimenhydrinate Dosage - How to Take Gravol Tablets?

Generic Dimenhydrinate tablets should be administered exactly as suggested by your doctor. Your doctor may recommend a dosage of Gravol tablets depending on your age, medical requirement, body weight, other medical conditions, and current medications. Gravol tablets should be swallowed with a glass of water. Dimenhydrinate tablets can be administered either before or after a meal.
Your doctor may alter the dosage of Gravol tablets depending on your response to treatment and the severity of the medical condition. Gravol tablets work effectively if the amount of the Dimenhydrinate is maintained at a constant level in the body. You should be systematic about the daily schedule for the medication such that you take Dimenhydrinate tablets at about the same time every day, to get the maximum benefit of the medication.
Continue taking Gravol tablets without missing any doses for the recommended treatment period and do not stop the treatment suddenly even if you feel better. The recommended dosage of Gravol tablets for the treatment of the symptoms of motion sickness such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and vertigo is 50 mg to 100 mg, administered every 4 hours. The maximum recommended daily dosage of Gravol tablets is 400 mg. The long-acting variety of Gravol tablets should be administered every 8 to 12 hours, with a maximum of 3 tablets consumed per day. Patients using Gravol for motion sickness should take the first dose of Gravol tablets at least 30 minutes and preferably 1 to 2 hours before any activity such as travel. Patients using Gravol tablets for the treatment of nausea and vomiting post medical procedures such as surgery should be administered a dosage of 50 mg to 100 mg. The maximum recommended daily dosage of Gravol tablets is 400 mg in post-surgery patients.
Children above the age of 2 years are recommended a dose of Gravol tablets depending on their age and body weight. Gravol tablets should not be administered to children or infants who are below the age of years. For children between the ages of 2 and 12 years, Gravol tablets should be administered every 6 to 8 hours. For children who are at least 12 years, Gravol tablets can be administered every 4 to 6 hours.

Missed Dose

If you miss your regular dose of Dimenhydrinate tablets, take it as soon as you remember. You can continue your regular schedule the next day.

Dimenhydrinate Mechanism of Action – How Does Gravol Work?

Dimenhydrinate belongs to the group of medications known as antihistamines. Gravol tablets are recommended as an anti-nauseate, antiemetic, and anti-vertigo agent.
Dimenhydrinate exerts its mechanism of action to alleviate or prevent the symptoms such as nausea and vomiting by employing its effect on the part of the brain which regulates bodily effects such as vomiting.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature (20°C to 25°C), protected from heat, moisture, and sunlight. Excursions permitted to 15°C to 30°C.

Contraindications

Gravol tablets are contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to Dimenhydrinate or any inactive ingredient present in Gravol tablets.

Overdose

Symptoms of dimenhydrinate toxicity in children may resemble atropine overdosage and include dilated pupils, flushed face, excitation, hallucinations, confusion, ataxia, intermittent clonic convulsions, coma, cardiorespiratory collapse, and death. Symptoms may be delayed up to 2 hours after ingestion; death may occur within 18 hours.
In adults, 500 mg or more of dimenhydrinate may cause extreme difficulty in speech and swallowing, and produces a psychosis indistinguishable from that of atropine poisoning. CNS excitation may be preceded by sedation, leading to a cycle of CNS excitation, seizures, and postictal depression.

Medical History

Allergy

Dimenhydrinate Interactions
Before beginning the oral therapy of Gravol tablets, please tell your doctor about all your present medications including prescription drugs, over the counter medications, mineral supplements, herbal products, and vitamins. Gravol tablets are known to have drug interactions with certain other medications. Please inform your doctor if you are taking sodium oxybate (GHB) because an increase in sleep duration and a decrease in the capacity to breathe are expected to develop; MAO inhibitors (e.g. phenelzine) because severe side effects such as high blood pressure or seizure, may develop; antibiotics that may result in hearing problems (e.g. gentamicin and vancomycin) because Dimenhydrinate may conceal the symptoms of hearing disorders.
Gravol and Alcohol
Avoid or limit the consumption of alcohol during the treatment with Generic Dimenhydrinate tablets (Gravol tablets) because it may increase the risk of certain side effects such as drowsiness.
Gravol Tablets - Driving and Other Activities
Dimenhydrinate tablets may make you light-headed or impair your vision. Avoid activities such as driving, using machinery, or performing any activity that requires complete vigilance or perfect vision until you are sure about your safety.
Live Vaccinations, Surgery and Regular Medical Tests
If you plan to have live vaccinations, surgery or any dental procedure, inform your doctor, anesthetist, or dentist about your course of Gravol tablets. Side Effects of Gravol Tablets

  • Central Nervous System- dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, excitement (especially in children), blurred vision or any change in vision, convulsions, decreased alertness, hallucinations, seizures
  • ENT and Gastrointestinal System- dry mouth, nose, or throat, constipation, cough, sore throat, thickening of mucous
  • Genitourinary System- difficulty passing urine
  • Cardiovascular System- chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Hypersensitivity- hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, throat, hands, feet; tightness in the chest; redness
  • General- clumsiness or unsteadiness (mild to moderate), fatigue, unusual tiredness or weakness, unusual bleeding or bruising
