Deslor (Generic Desloratadine tablets) is used in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older for the relief of symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis and urticaria.

Uses of Deslor (Generic Desloratadine Tablets)

Deslor tablets (Generic Desloratadine) are a histamine-1 (H1) receptor antagonist indicated for:
Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis: relief of nasal and non-nasal symptoms in patients 12 years of age and older.
Perennial Allergic Rhinitis: relief of nasal and non-nasal symptoms in patients 12 years of age and older.
Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria: symptomatic relief of pruritus, reduction in the number of hives, and size of hives in patients 12 years of age and older.
Antihistamines work by preventing the effects of a substance called histamine, which is produced by the body. Histamine can cause itching, sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes. Also, in some persons histamine can close up the bronchial tubes (air passages of the lungs) and make breathing difficult. Histamine can also cause some persons to have hives, with severe itching of the skin.

Adults and Adolescents 12 Years of Age and Over: The dosage of Desloratadine Tablets is one 5 mg tablet once daily
Deslor tablets work effectively if the amount of Desloratadine is maintained at a constant level in the body. Missed Dose

Desloratadine Tablets Mechanism of Action

Desloratadine's mechanism of action involves acting as a selective, peripheral histamine H1-receptor antagonist. It functions as a functional antagonist, competing with histamine to bind to peripheral H1 receptors and blocking their activation by histamine.
This action prevents the symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and hives. Because it does not easily enter the central nervous system, it is considered non-sedating and long-acting.

Contraindications

Overdose

In the event of overdose, consider standard measures to remove unabsorbed active substance.
Symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended. Desloratadine tablets administered at a dose of 45 mg daily (nine times the clinical dose) for ten days showed no statistically or clinically relevant prolongation of the QTc interval.
Desloratadine is not eliminated by hemodialysis; it is not known if it is eliminated by peritoneal dialysis.

Warnings and Precautions

Renal function impairment
In the case of severe renal insufficiency, Aerius should be used with caution.
Seizures
Desloratadine should be administered with caution in patients with medical or familial history of seizures, and mainly young children, being more susceptible to develop new seizures under desloratadine treatment. Healthcare providers may consider discontinuing desloratadine in patients who experience a seizure while on treatment.
Desloratadine tablet contains lactose
Patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, the total lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this medicinal product.
Hypersensitivity Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions including rash, pruritus, urticaria, edema, dyspnea, and anaphylaxis have been reported after administration of desloratadine. If such a reaction occurs, therapy with Desloratadine Tablets should be stopped and alternative treatment should be considered.

Effects On Ability To Drive And Use Machines

Desloratadine has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines based on clinical trials. Patients should be informed that most people do not experience drowsiness. Nevertheless, as there is individual variation in response to all medicinal products, it is recommended that patients are advised not to engage in activities requiring mental alertness, such as driving a car or using machines, until they have established their own response to the medicinal product.

Animal studies do not indicate direct or indirect harmful effects with respect to reproductive toxicity. Desloratadine was not teratogenic in rats at doses up to 48 mg/kg/day (estimated desloratadine and desloratadine metabolite exposures were approximately 210 times the AUC in humans at the recommended daily oral dose) or in rabbits at doses up to 60 mg/kg/day (estimated desloratadine exposures were approximately 230 times the AUC in humans at the recommended daily oral dose).
A large amount of data on pregnant women (more than 1,000 pregnancy outcomes) indicate no malformative nor foeto/ neonatal toxicity of desloratadine.

Nursing Considerations

Desloratadine (Deslor Tablets) has been identified in breastfed newborns/infants of treated women. The effect of desloratadine on newborns/infants is unknown. A decision must be made whether to discontinue breast-feeding or to discontinue /abstain from desloratadine therapy taking into account the benefit of breast feeding for the child and the benefit of therapy for the woman.
Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
