Canesten Cream Dosage - How to Apply Clotrimazole Cream?

Generic Clotrimazole Cream is a topical antifungal medication and should be used exactly as suggested by your doctor. Your doctor may recommend a dosage of Clotrimazole Cream depending on your age, medical requirement, body weight, other medical conditions, and current medications. Clotrimazole Cream should be applied only on the skin. Avoid sensitive areas like near the eyes, lips, and nostrils. You should be systematic about the schedule for the medication such that you apply Canesten Cream at the same time every day, to get the maximum benefit of the medication. Canesten Cream is applied two to three times a day.

Adult patients using Canesten Cream for the treatment of jock itch, athlete's foot, and ringworm should apply a thin layer of Clotrimazole Cream and gently rub it into the site of treatment and adjoining skin area twice daily, preferably in the morning and evening. The benefit of Clotrimazole Cream should be visible within the first week of treatment with a considerable reduction in symptoms such as itching. Patients suffering from jock itch and ringworm should continue treatment with Clotrimazole Cream for 2 to 4 weeks. In case of patients with the medical condition of athlete's foot, treatment with Clotrimazole Cream may be required for at least 4 weeks. Also take special precaution to avoid applying Clotrimazole Cream on moist skin by making it a point to wash and dry the feet thoroughly, especially the area between the toes, before applying Clotrimazole Cream.
For foot infections, make sure you dry your feet thoroughly (especially between the toes) and use shoes which have a good fit on your feet and has appropriate ventilation. It would also be helpful to wear socks made up cotton or wool to enhance treatment results and to prevent recurrence of infections. Patients should continue the treatment with Clotrimazole topical cream for about 2 weeks after the skin symptoms have significantly disappeared. Continuous treatment with Clotrimazole Cream for this time period will ensure that you do not develop a relapse of the skin condition.

Clotrimazole cream can only help to alleviate the external symptoms of vaginal thrush such as itching, inflammation, and soreness. Clotrimazole cream is not beneficial for the treatment of infection present in the inner layers of the vagina. In such cases, Clotrimazole cream should be administered in combination with medications that are safe for the usage in the internal parts of vagina, or along with orally administered antifungal medications. Consult your doctor for further instructions.
Clotrimazole cream used for the treatment of diaper rash in infants should be used twice a day, preferably in the morning and evening after the diapers have been changed for a period of approximately two weeks. Treatment with Clotrimazole cream should not be extended beyond 14 days.

Canesten Mechanism of Action – How Does Clotrimazole Cream Work?

Clotrimazole Cream is an antifungal formulation which is used for the treatment of different skin conditions such as ringworm, athlete’s foot, jock itch, vaginal thrush, fungal nappy rash etc. Clotrimazole Cream contains Clotrimazole as the active ingredient which belongs to a class of medication known as imidazoles.
Clotrimazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent which is effective against a variety of fungi and yeast. Clotrimazole kills the fungal organisms by affecting their cell membranes. Clotrimazole is known to inhibit the synthesis of ergosterol, a substance which is a vital structural component of the fungal cell membrane. Intact cell membranes are essential for the survival of fungi because they prevent the entry of harmful and unwanted substances into the cell and also avoid the spillage of internal cell contents into the surrounding environment.  The absence of ergosterol results in the occurrence of holes or empty spaces in the cell membrane which results in the discharge of cellular components of the fungi. This eventually kills the fungi and results in the effective treatment of the fungal infection.
