Canesten Mechanism of Action – How Does Clotrimazole Vaginal Cream Work?

Clotrimazole Vaginal Cream is an antifungal formulation containing Clotrimazole as the active ingredient, which belongs to a class of medication known as imidazoles. Clotrimazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent which is powerful against a variety of fungi and yeast. Clotrimazole destroys the fungal organisms by disrupting their cell membranes. Clotrimazole is known to impede the synthesis of ergosterol, a substance which is a vital structural and functional component of the fungal cell membrane.
Undamaged cell membranes are crucial for the survival of fungi because they prevent the access of harmful and unwanted substances into the cell and also avoid the leakage of internal cell contents into the surrounding cellular environment. The absence of ergosterol results in the occurrence of holes or empty spaces in the cell membrane which results in the discharge of cellular components of the fungi. This eventually kills the fungi and results in the effective treatment of the fungal infection.
