Aziderm Mechanism of Action – How Does Azelaic Acid Cream Work?

Azelaic Acid Cream is an antibacterial formulation which is used for the treatment of different skin conditions such as acne, blackheads, and rosacea. Azelaic Acid Cream belongs to a class of medication known as dicarboxylic acids, which kills the bacteria that cause skin infections such as acne.
Azelaic Acid decreases the synthesis of a protein called keratin which is present on the surface of skin cells. Keratin blocks the pores on the skin resulting in the development of acne conditions. By inhibiting keratin production, Azelaic Acid unclogs the pores and allows the smooth movement of sebum from the sebaceous glands located on the skin. As a result, there is a decrease in the formation of blackheads and spots.

Azelaic acid also destroys the bacteria which causes with acne. Propionebacterium acnes is a category of bacteria, whose survival is dependent on the sebum synthesized by the sebaceous glands located in the skin. During its growth, the bacteria releases waste products and fatty acids that disturb the functioning of the sebaceous glands, resulting in their inflamed condition. Inflamed sebaceous gland manifest as dark spots on the skin. Azelaic acid controls the multiplication of the bacteria by blocking their food source (sebum) and thus impedes their growth. By regulating the survival and population of bacteria, Azelaic acid eases the inflammation of the sebaceous glands, thus permitting the speedy recovery process of the skin.
