Zentel (Albendazole Tablets) is used to treat neurocysticercosis, an infection of the nervous system caused by pork tapeworms. This medicine is also used to treat cystic hydatid disease of the liver, lung, and peritoneum, an infection caused by dog tapeworms.
Zentel tablets, an effective deworming medicine is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Limited, India, in the strengths of 400 mg.
Bandy tablets, is another deworming medicine containing the same active ingredient as Zentel tablets and is manufactured by Mankind Pharma Limited, India in the strengths of 400 mg.

Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient

The active ingredient present in Zentel Tablets is Albendazole. Each Zentel tablet contains 400 mg of Albendazole.

Uses of Generic Albendazole Tablets

Zentel and Bandy tablets contain the active ingredient Albendazole. They are used to clear worms or parasites from the gut and other tissues. Albendazole is a benzimidazole carbamate with antihelmintic and antiprotozoal activity against intestinal and tissue parasites.
Albendazole is indicated in the treatment of the following clinical conditions caused by sensitive intestinal helminths/protozoa:

• - Hookworm disease (ancylostomiasis and necatoriasis)

Zentel (Albendazole Tablets) - Dosage

Generic Albendazole tablets should be administered exactly as suggested by your doctor. Your doctor may recommend a dosage of Zentel tablets depending on your age, medical requirement, body weight, other medical conditions, and current medications.
Albendazole tablets should be taken with food.
Patients weighing 60 kg or greater:
400 mg twice daily;
Patients weighing less than 60 kg:
15 mg/kg/day in divided doses twice daily (maximum total daily dose 800 mg).
Hydatid disease:
28-day cycle followed by 14-day Albendazole-free interval for a total of 3 cycles.
Neurocysticercosis:
8 to 30 days.
Zentel tablets work effectively if the amount of Albendazole is maintained at a constant level in the body. You should be systematic about the daily schedule for the medication such that you take tablets at about the same time every day, to get the maximum benefit of the medication. Continue taking Zentel tablets without missing any doses for the recommended treatment period and do not stop the treatment suddenly even if you feel better.

Missed Dose

If you forget to take your regular Zentel tablet dose on time, take it whenever you remember.
If you remember the next day, skip the missed dose and take your scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose to compensate the missed dose.

Albendazole Tablets Mechanism of Action

Albendazole works primarily by disrupting the cellular structure of parasitic worms. The drug is a benzimidazole carbamate, which means it belongs to a class of compounds known for their antiparasitic properties. The primary target of Albendazole in parasitic organisms is the microtubule system, specifically the protein tubulin.
Microtubules are essential components of the cellular cytoskeleton, playing critical roles in maintaining cell shape, intracellular transport, and cell division. In parasitic worms, microtubules are vital for nutrient absorption and other cellular processes. Albendazole binds selectively to the beta-tubulin subunit of the microtubules. This binding inhibits the polymerization of tubulin into microtubules, thereby disrupting the microtubule structure.

Storage Instructions for Zentel (Albendazole Tablets)

Store Bandy tablets or Zentel tablets at controlled room temperature (20°C to 25°C),protected from heat, moisture, and sunlight. Excursions are permitted from 15°C to 30°C.
Retain the original packing of the medication and do not consume Bandy tablets past its expiration date printed on the blister pack. Keep the pack of Zentel tablets away from the reach of children and pets. Do not dispose Bandy tablets or Zentel tablets along with domestic waste or sewage. Contraindications

Bandy tablets and Zentel tablets are contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Albendazole or any inactive ingredient present in Bandy tablets and Zentel tablets. Bandy tablets and Zentel tablets are contraindicated in the following cases:
Albendazole must not be used during pregnancy.

Overdose

In case of overdosage, symptomatic therapy and general supportive measures are recommended.

Warnings and Precautions

Bone Marrow Suppression
Fatalities associated with the use of Albendazole have been reported due to granulocytopenia or pancytopenia. Albendazole may cause bone marrow suppression, aplastic anemia, and agranulocytosis. Monitor blood counts at the beginning of each 28-day cycle of therapy, and every 2 weeks while on therapy with Albendazole in all patients.
Embryo-Fetal Toxicity
Based on findings from animal reproduction studies, Albendazole may cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman. Embryotoxicity and skeletal malformations were reported in rats and rabbits when treated during the period of organogenesis (at oral doses approximately 0.1 to 0.6 times the recommended human dose normalized for total body surface area). Advise pregnant women of the potential risk to a fetus. Pregnancy testing is recommended for females of reproductive potential prior to initiating Albendazole
Risk of Neurologic Symptoms in Neurocysticercosis
Patients being treated for neurocysticercosis should receive steroid and anticonvulsant therapy to prevent neurological symptoms (e.g. seizures, increased intracranial pressure and focal signs) as a result of an inflammatory reaction caused by death of the parasite within the brain.
Risk of Retinal Damage in Patients with Retinal Neurocysticercosis
Cysticercosis may involve the retina. Before initiating therapy for neurocysticercosis, examine the patient for the presence of retinal lesions. If such lesions are visualized, weigh the need for anticysticeral therapy against the possibility of retinal damage resulting from inflammatory damage caused by Albendazole-induced death of the parasite.
Hepatic Effects
In clinical trials, treatment with Albendazole has been associated with mild to moderate elevations of hepatic enzymes in approximately 16% of patients. These elevations have generally returned to normal upon discontinuation of therapy. There have also been case reports of acute liver failure of uncertain causality and hepatitis
Unmasking of Neurocysticercosis in Hydatid Patients
Undiagnosed neurocysticercosis may be uncovered in patients treated with Albendazole for other conditions. Patients with epidemiologic factors who are at risk for neurocysticercosis should be evaluated prior to initiation of therapy.

Effects on Ability to Drive and Use Machines

There have been no studies to investigate the effect of Albendazole (Bandy tablets or Zentel tablets) on driving performance or the ability to operate machinery. However, when driving vehicles or operating machinery, it should be taken into account that dizziness has been reported after using Albendazole.

Side Effects of Albendazole Tablets (Bandy Tablets or Zentel Tablets)

Side Effects occurring with a frequency of 1% or greater during the treatment of either disease (Hydatid Disease or Neurocysticercosis )are described below.

• Gastrointestinal: Abdominal Pain, Nausea, Vomiting
• General disorders and administration site conditions: Fever,
• Investigations: Elevated Hepatic Enzymes
• Nervous system disorders:Dizziness, Headache, Meningeal Signs, Raised Intracranial Pressure, Vertigo
• Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders:Reversible Alopecia

The following side effects were observed at an incidence of less than 1%:
Blood and Lymphatic System Disorders: There have been reports of leukopenia, granulocytopenia, pancytopenia, agranulocytosis, or thrombocytopenia.
Immune System Disorders: Hypersensitivity reactions, including rash and urticaria.

Albendazole Tablets During Pregnancy

Albendazole (Bandy tablets or Zentel tablets) has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category C.
Albendazole has been shown to be teratogenic (to cause embryotoxicity and skeletal malformations) in pregnant rats and rabbits.
The teratogenic response in the rat was shown at oral doses of 10 and 30 mg/kg/day (0.10 times and 0.32 times the recommended human dose based on body surface area in mg/m2, respectively)
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of albendazole administration in pregnant women. Albendazole should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
Do not use this medicine without your doctor's consent in case you are pregnant. Stop using this medication and inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant during treatment.

Nursing Considerations

Albendazole (Bandy tablets or Zentel tablets) is excreted in animal milk. It is not known whether it is excreted in human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when albendazole is administered to a nursing woman.
